SEEKING NEW LEADERSHIP FOR IOWA

Bob Vander Plaats spoke to Club members about his desire to be governor of Iowa. Originating from Sioux City, Vander Plaats emphasized that Iowa needs more leadership in state government rather than politics as usual. Vander Plaats was a teacher, coach, and high school principal for eleven years. More recently he has been CEO of a health care and human services business. Currently he is President of MVP Leadership a consulting service for business, education, and foundations. Vander Plaats noted that business leadership is needed in Iowa as the state is ranked next to last among all other states in hospitable business environment, business opportunities, and available private venture capital. However, it is ranked first with both parents in a family working. Vander Plaats said as governor he would push for reform to reduce the number of representatives and senators, to change state agencies to create a better business environment, and to achieve better money management at the state level. As a Republican candidate for governor, the first hurdle for Vander Plaats is the primary election in June.
